Working Towards a Bike-able St. Albert!

Over the past few months SABA has been working on putting together a grant application for the City of St. Albert’s Environmental Initiatives Grant program.

We’re excited to announce that today, St. Albert City Council has approved the recommendation from the Environmental Advisory Committee to award SABA $8000 towards the purchase and installation of two bicycle repair stations, one bicycle/skateboard deck repair station, and two air pumps – to be located strategically throughout the City of St. Albert!!

The bbike standike repair stations will be placed in high (bicycle) traffic locations, and allow riders to perform quick, easy repairs to their bikes using a variety of permanently attached, common bike tools. Need to tighten a shifter or brake cable?  No problem!  Need to change your tire?  The repair stand has got you covered! (Assuming you carry a spare with you.  You do carry a spare with you, right?)

air pump

Air pumps will be located at two of the locations, and will allow riders to quickly get some air if they have a flat or low tire!

We’ll also be looking to install a hybrid skateboard and bicycle repair stand, likely to be located near the St. Albert Skateboard Park. This stand will allow for basic repairs of your bicycle, but also will include common tools you can use to perform quick maintenance on your board!

SABA is excited to have been chosen as one of the recipients of this great initiative, and we’re looking forward to working with the City over the winter months to choose the final locations and plan for the installation of these stands!

Congratulations to all the other groups that were also recommended for their own environmental initiatives!!

The SPIN FUNdraiser is a Win-Win

NOTE: The first day of the first session has been moved back by a week. We will begin the first session on December 2nd and add a class to the end of the session. We are hoping to fill the class to optimize our fundraising efforts. Thanks

The days are short and the snow is imminent. Time to spin with #bikestalbert

SABA is bringing back the SPIN. Stay bike fit this winter and feel good that proceeds contribute to promoting a safe and active cycling culture here in St. Albert.

Two, ten session classes are being generously hosted at the Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club starting on November 25th and February 17th. These one hour classes start on Wednesday evenings starting at 7:15pm. Space is limited to 18 participants however, personal bikes and trainers are welcome – space permitting. A full class means that SABA can invest more back into St. Albert’s cycling community.

Final Scheduled Rec Ride this Thursday!

Hope you can make it out for the last scheduled Rec Ride of the year tomorrow!  Depending on the weather in the coming weeks we may be able to squeeze in a few more.  Stay tuned to our various pages for details if we do!

As we wind down our summer riding season our eyes turn to staying fit through the cold days ahead.  We had a blast running our SPIN classes last winter and are looking at possibly doing them again this year.  We’re still in the planning/organizing stages, but as we get info to share we’ll definitely post it up.  Stay tuned!

Cycle Commuter Class

commuter

Yes the title was meant to be confusing. While cycle commuters are classy, SABA would like to see if there is interest in a class on how to safely commute from St. Albert into the downtown core. You might be surprised to know that there are better routes than St. Albert Trail; that you don’t need anything special to get a great workout, save gas (cash) and truly understand the utility of a bicycle as transportation.

If you’ve ever contemplated it we have a veteran commuter willing to share his knowledge and routes; all he needs is an audience.

If you have ever considered commuting to work and need a guided tour and some pointers please connect with Greg at macbikesalot@gmail.com

We are Saved!

Thanks for your help picking this year’s SABA T-shirt artwork. “One Pedal at a Time” is the perfect choice because it’s how we cyclists propel ourselves through life.

So, now that we have something to wear, it is safe to take your bike down to St. Albert’s Canada Day celebration, park at the Cranky’s bike parking and visit our mini skills park. Don’t forget your lid.

Want to know more about the future of the bike skills park and how we are working towards building a safe and vibrant St. Albert cycling community? We’ll be the ones in the fancy new shirts.

We can’t make up out minds!

Help us #stalbert! We can’t decide which shirt to print for our booth at next week’s Canada Day celebrations. Which do you like? Visit the poll to vote: http://www.easypolls.net/poll.html…

Neighbourhood Watch

Please note this message from our friends at Cranky’s Bike Shop:

Early this morning somebody broke into the shop and stole 4 full suspension bikes. Total value of the bikes stolen was about $10,000. I’ve attached images and serial numbers of the stolen bikes. Could you please keep an eye out for the bikes. If you see anything you can either contact me or the St. Albert RCMP. Thanks.
